Just took engine and trans out got some questions

Post by Rotoariesarecool »

Just took the engine and trans out and it occured to me I dont know what everything is in the engine bay, so I just need some help identifying a couple of these things.

so Im 97.3% sure this is the steering box correct? If so then what is this?
Image
is it just a bearing or something? (don't really know how steering works totally yet)
and then

my biggest question is this black canister in the front of the engine bay, is it like an evap canister for smog or something?

P.S. Im selling the engine and trans if anyone wants it (its not very good) http://www.fiatspider.com/f15/viewtopic ... 91#p287791

First photo is the steering box. Second one is the steering damper that dampens out road feedback. Third is ?? Maybe evap canister, mine's rectangular. Any hoses going to it?

Yes -
1. Steering box
2. Steering Idler/Steering Damper Box
3. Fuel Vapor Charcoal Canister

Feel free to ask if you run into any other issues. A great way to verify parts is to visit any of the parts vendor websites and seach through them. They have lots of pictures and great descriptions on most parts.

That third object does indeed look like an vapor cannister but I've never seen one that shape or in that location on a Spider? What year is your car?

100% certain it is the charcoal vapor canister on earlier Spiders and that is where it was originally located. Only the later Spiders had the boxy ones.
