Charcoal canister now wanted?

Post by architect »

Hello,

This forum did a great job helping me remove all the emissions related items from my 78 Fiat 124. I eventually replaced the entire fuel system (lines, tank, pump, and carb).

The tank is now vented, with a simple hose and breather filter... and that came along with a fuel smell!

I really would like to mask the smell from the vent hose. Should I go back to a charcoal canister? If I'm reading this right.. I should run a vacuum line to the canister, and connect my vent hose from the tank to the canister. Where should I locate the canister? (trunk? under the car? under the hood?) And what canister? (aftermarket, Fiat?)

Personally it has to be outside the car in an area with good airflow which inside the trunk is not.

Any canister from the junkyard that's for around a 2 liter engine should do. Mine being a diesel conversion is a bit different and thankfully it was not vented inside the trunk by the person who converted it as that could make the car unbearable to be in.

Oops I meant under the trunk! Ha definitely not inside the trunk! BOOM!

After looking around the web, there’s not much options for an aftermarket canister (compact) and will likely go with a FIAT make.

I noticed there is a round version (3 ports) and a recangle (2 port) version. Anyone know the difference?

Your canister will need an 'incoming port' (tank vent) and an 'outgoing port' that goes to carburetor vacuum. Extra ports are added for applications that include more 'incoming ports' for fuel vapor sources.
Looks like you just need the single vapor vent from your carb,...so a two port vapor canister would do nicely.
My '79 2000 has a two port canister, but I also see a cap on the top,...so it may be a three port, and Fiat caps the third port off (or it's a one-way valve,...). Tank vent enters the bottom of the canister, and carb vacuum comes off the vent at the front of the canister top, next to the cap.
Sure hope this helps you!
