82 FI 124 won’t start

Post by BammBamm »

So my car has been running great and drive it daily. While at 80mph it just went blah blah blah. As soon as I pushed in the clutch it died. When stopped I could start it with the gas pedal all the way down but would one do 800rpm roughly. Now won’t start at all. Checked the fuel pump 37psi. Checked compression-all good. Checked injector pulse-good. Spark appears to be working but not sure if it’s weak. I also can’t find my repair book. Please give me suggestions.

I have been able to get it to stumble a little and kinda run in starter fluid. But it sounds like it’s back firing.

Thermo switch on the Tee. The symptoms sound familiar Coolant temperature sending unit resistance should be 2,000 to 3,000 Ohms at 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius ) and 250 to 400 Ohms at 176 degrees Fahrenheit (80 degrees Celsius )

So I still need help. The old coolant sensor had a resistance of 3.5k so I replaced it. No change. What other options can it be? I have run out of ideas.

I like to begin trouble shooting by checking static timing. With the crank set to TDC are both cam wheel timing mark aligned to their marks on the cam boxes?
Inspection of distributor cap, rotor, and pick up wires.
Is the area around the spark plugs clean and dry.

You need to get a Bosch L-Jetronic Fuel Injection Manual as it will guide you through all of the trouble shooting you need. Just google it as it's common on the internet.

Have you checked the wires under the distributor plate? Mine did that and I found a frayed wire that would ground when the revs went up and the plate moved.

Open your double relay to check the soldering for broken one.

I second the fuel injection manual. VERY intuitive, and start to finish trouble shooting can be done in an afternoon.
Top of my head go to's worth a quick check:
1. Check the connection on the cable to the AFM.
2. Make sure the flap inside the AFM is moving freely and not sticking. I had intermittent sticking, a little sanding inside took care of that.
3. Check fuel injector connections. The one by the firewall somehow popped off of mine once. Check the cold start valve connection as well.
4. Check the double relay on the relay panel under the glove box. IIRC it's a simple continuity test with a multi meter.
5. The obvious cable check from the dizzy to coil and each spark plug.

Good luck!

+1, good ideas. Check the fuel pressure too, with a T off of the cold start valve, and a gauge that reads to at least 40 psi. Should be in the mid 30's.
