Someone is making popcorn... in my cat!
Someone is making popcorn... in my cat!
So for the past few days I've had this increasingly unbearable exhaust noise. I swung by a local muffler shop to have the guy take a look at the brackets and he pointed out to me that the noise is coming from the cat, which has a loose part banging around inside.
So, I am now in the market for a high-flow cat and new muffler (why not?) and was hoping for some suggestions.

Alternative method - remove the cat, use a bar to beat the interior out of it, reinstall. Gain about 5 HP.
Still passes emissions and visual inspection, at least all of my Spiders did.

nearly impossible now to pass Calif emissions test with a cat that doesn't work; the standards are way too tight

I'm unfamiliar with a high flow cat. But I think the best suggestion I could make would be to find a new best friend who happens to own a muffler shop.

I've thought about gutting the cat, but unfortunately I don't have any flanges. I think the exhaust was replaced by the PO, everything is welded together.
I would go with a straight shot to a muffler, but unfortunately all the muffler shops around here are paranoid about getting in trouble, so they won't cut a cat out.
Ideally, I'd replace the cat with a high flow unit (so I can still pass smog) and an aftermarket muffler to make-a the vroom vroom music.

Re: Someone is making popcorn... in my cat!
you really don't need a high flow cat, your pipe dia is only about 1 3/4". You can get a replacement cat installed for about $125. With the cat in place, the sound will be quite muffled anyway so really no need to spend a fortune on a muff. I've run them with a cat, and just the front muff with a straight pipe out the back and they aren't that loud. You might even consider a glass pack to replace the rear muff. They're very cheap

I picked up a cat and glasspack muffler from summit. Grand total: $99.85 with 2 day air shipping. Not bad!

Just got back from the muffler shop. Got a new cat and glasspack installed. WOW! Sounds beefy.
