Injector wear and replacement
'81, has not been started or driven for at least seven years. I took the injectors in for cleaning and the injector service shop (usually they do big rig diesel injectors) said that all four were bad. Guy said that if they sit long enough, they ruin. Hm, really? Anyone else have this experience? Okay, fine, so if I need new injectors, is there some awful reason why I'd not want to only spend $38 for rebuilt ones as opposed to double that, or more, for new ones? I've looked up the discussions on the site and I find questions but not any postings on experiences, good or bad, with rebuilt injectors. Anyone?

Sorry, not to rebuild the ones I have, which I assume are thrashed, but to purchase rebuilt injectors.

Re: Injector wear and replacement
From my experience injectors can set for a long long LONG time and be good. They can be stuck and need to be freed up and cleaned. I sent 8 injectors to Injector Specialist this last summer, that came out of parts cars that had been setting for decades. One was bad the rest where restored. My cost $25 each to restore and 5 to check the bad one. I got pictures of injection pattern and flow rates, both before and after restored. I put a set of these injectors in my 82 Spider and I was surprised at how much better it started and ran. This car started and ran good before now it runs like a new car now. I would go with injectors from a rebuild and flow rate shop over new injectors any day. You need uniform flow rates for the car to run good. I find it hard to believe that all 4 of your injectors where bad.

+1. OK Injectors did mine and did a great job, with a report and no injector mechanical problems. If they are trashed, the cleaning process will tell you, then you only replace the bad ones.

Re: Injector wear and replacement
Finally made it to the shop to pick up my injectors. I asked what it mean that two are "bad." Guy says that when they ran the fluid through them they could not get them to an appropriate flow rate. (The other two did and were deemed good.) So...seems odd to me that some other place that specializes in fuel injectors can do something to these that this shop, which only services injectors and systems, could not. Anyone else had this experience: one place says they are bad but another can rebuild them?

Re: Injector wear and replacement
Second opinion? Did they give you old parts/ replace filter basket new pintles and gaskets? Also a report on the flow rates etc.?

Re: Injector wear and replacement
No reports. Slim pickings here for injector maintenance. (Thus the having to drive to Little Rock.) I did get the two bad ones back. I will look for a second opinion, somewhere within the tri-state area...

Re: Injector wear and replacement
Any good injector rebuild shop will give you pictures of the spray pattern both before and after serving. They will also provide the flow rates both before and after serving. If the shop doesn't do this then I won't deal with them. I would go with a known shop and send them out, and not look for something close. I send mine to Fuel Injection Specialist in CO. There's OK injectors and others that you can find if you do a search of this forum.

Re: Injector wear and replacement
I liked this service, I called on a Saturday night, The owner picked up and we talked a bit. After he was finished he called me and gave a verbal as well as a written report. The injectors were clean and painted with all the rubber in place

Re: Injector wear and replacement
Okay, my injectors are back. Frustrated with the local shop, I sent the two bad ones off to Jim at Injector Repair LLC (http://injectorrepair.com/). Hard to say enough good things about what Jim did. He communicated, told me when he received them, told me what processes they were undergoing, and then he called me! He let me know that flow rates didn't match, so one was off, but could not tell which b/c he only had two. Also told me filters were missing (and he replaced them). I sent off the other two and the end of the story is that Jim got the bad one to clean up and balance, checked with flow rates against my two good injectors, packed it all up and sent them back. So, $17 each for all of that, but only for the two he worked on; for the good ones he said, "I don't charge for flow testing." Wow. I have never received such service and I hope this posting will get him more business.
Wish I could say that I got them all hooked up and it runs like a charm but, ah, uh, I've just a bit more work to get done...like fuel lines, tank, hoses...everything.
