Fuel Injection or Carbs

Post by jlopresto »

i have an 85 Spider 2000. Previous owner ripped out the fuel injection system because if a throttle problem. Should I keep the carb or try to put back new Fuel injection?

It all depends upon what carb and intake he put on the car. If it is a single plane manifold with a DMSA or ADFA carb, you have a good, reliable, simple fuel system that will give good performance without robbing too much in fuel economy. If it is a dual plane manifold and/or has and ADHA carb, rip it off and go with the fuel injection. If it has twin IDFs, it will be more maintenance heavy, but will give good performance if tuned properly.

Since you have an 85 Azzurra, the conversion to carbs will devalue your car to a collector. The original PininFarina parts are critical if you're restoring the car. If you're just driving it for fun and don't give a rip - do what you want.

I've owned many Fiat Spiders. I personally love the fuel injected motors. When operating correctly, the car will get 34 mpg on the freeway and around 23 in town while still producing over 100 hp in stock configuration. The carbs won't get that kind of fuel mileage. Most carb'd motors put out less hp than the EFI cars. The EFI also adjusts to altitude if you're driving at higher elevations. The carb must be manually adjusted.

Going back to EFI would be my preference on an 85.

Thanks. I appreciate the insight. I’ll research the carb, but probably going to work on adding the fuel injection back on. Any ideas where. Can find new or refund fuel injection computers.

Jlopresto post in the parts wanted section and eventually people will contact you with what they’ve got.

There are also other forums, like Mirafiori, that you could check out as well.

Numerous Facebook pages too, such as Everything Fiat 124 & Fiat Spider.

Craigslist is a decent source in my area, yours may be too.
