Won't rev up
I have 2 Liter engine that I installed in my 74 spyder five year ago since then the car as ran great .A few weeks ago I went for what I though would be my last ride till spring. The pulley on my crankshaft came off as I was driving I hear a loud bam, I pull over and check the engine didn't notice the missing pulley restarted the engine sounded good, right away the temperature gauge started to climb pulled over again knowing that something was wrong. That's when I saw the crankshaft pulley swing on the fan belt it came off stayed on the belt and was just there swinging back and forth. For whatever luck I had that day I was minutes away from my mechanic and most of it was down hill I removed the pulley restarted the engine got I rolling down the hill turn engine off and coasted down the street restarted again for under a minute coasted right to the mechanic shop .Now the problem hoping I didn't damage the engine the mechanic reinstalled another pulley and fasten it with a left handed bolt. Started the engine and sounded like normal but when you try to rev it up sounds like its beaning restrained release the throttle and goes back to a great sounding idle mechanic thinks it might be in the lower end any ideas or thoughts.

You are probably very lucky, because what you describe is probably the water pump pulley coming off, not the crankshaft pulley. If the crankshaft pulley came off, the camshafts would have no drive to make them spin, and the car would not run. Hopefully no other damage than a new water pump.

I'm not aware of a harmonic dampening type crank pulley on the Fiat so doubt that can be the issue. I'd start with your water pump since the pulley issue started there.

He may have been confusing the Aux Shaft for a balancer. This image below may help.

The crank pulley could come off but the timing belt still work if the crank sprocket remained, hence the engine still running. Since it drives the water pump and alternator (on my 2L anyway), this is consistent with the immediate overheating. Your Red Alt/Battery light should be lit as well.
(I have to stop going from memory, and actually look at the car when i answer these inquiries).

If indeed your crank pulley came off, which is what it sounds like, I would guess that your timing belt jumped a tooth or two. You have been very lucky so far. Go ahead and check the timing of your camshafts and you will know.

Thank you so much for replying to my problem .Went to the mechanic he's wants to drop the oil pan its strange the car was running great. Then came the" BAM " and if not the bam, what if the fan belt broke same results car would still run. But no water pump no alternator easy fix right replace fan belt or replace the crankshaft pulley in my case I replaced the pulley so what happened. We started the car up again the timing was dead nuts, with the timing cover off you could see the cams were turning so smooth then pull on the throttle cable and it sounds like something holding it back. I'm thinking fuel or may-be something like a bearing that at low rpms the bearing is ok but at higher rpms the bearing fails and causes something to bind or something to move. We're going to drop the pan and go from there any thoughts or any ideas are more than welcome I'll keep with up dates thank you Herman

Sounds like you checked the ignition timing but not the cam timing. Are the marks on the crankshaft pulley actually TDC?

carburetor or fuel injection, my guess is carburetor. But the sensor at the coolant tee may of gone bad when you overheated.

Did he set the timing at 0 degrees as if it was a 74, or at 12 degrees since it is an EFI motor? It should be 12 degrees. If it is set at 0 degrees as appropriate for a 74, it will not rev. properly since it is a 2 liter motor, electronic ignition with EFI.

timing was set for a 2 liter the 74 was a 1800.The car didn't have a performance problem prior to the pulley coming off .I am going to the mechanic today and try to take a video of the car trying to rev up and then try to post it
