No spark with new electronic ignition kit

Post by 124Fan »

I purchased the Vick electronic ignition kit that includes a distributor, new coil, and new ignition control module.

I have it installed but I am not getting any spark. I've looked a number of wiring diagrams for this control module that all look pretty much the same:

Here's the wiring diagram I've found online.

Here's how I've wired it up. This is just my setup to test it out. Once it's working, it will have a heat sink and heavier duty wire, wire loom, etc.

1. The distributor side of the ignition control module is "keyed" in that one of the contacts is smaller than the other, so the connector only fits one way. I'm sure that it is correct.
2. Terminal "C" on the control module goes to the negative side of the coil
3. Terminal "B" on the control module goes to the positive side of the coil
4. I have a ground wire going from the chassis (verified good) to the hole in the coil side of the control module

I'll call them on Monday but I'm hoping someone here has messed with this and may have some insight. I'd like to have the car running before the weekend is over without having to reinstall the old setup.

Thanks,
Sonny

I'm pretty sure you do not ground the module. Check the manual at MIRA or njfiat.org

Hard to see, but is the ignition lead on the right + terminal on the coil?

In the pic, the coil + terminal is on top.

+ terminal
1. 12v from ignition switch (light blue/black)
2. Red wire wire to “B” terminal on ignition module.

- terminal
1. Brown wire for tach
2. Black wire to “C” terminal on ignition module

Later 124's with electronic ignitions had the HEI module bolted to a heat sink on the fender near the coil.

It's alive!

The ground wire going from the body to the ignition module wasn't actually ground because it was bolted to "sort of" painted surface. I moved the wire over to the block and instantly got spark. Now it's time to upgrade the wiring and install a heat sink. Control module got really hot after only 10-15 seconds of running, so I shut her down.

Good to hear, Don't forget that heat paste under the module before you screw ir down.

Heat sink paste will be here tomorrow. Nobody local had it, so I called it a day.

This is how I ended up mounting it. I re-did the wiring using 14 gauge wire and the bracket is 1/8" thick aluminum plate which will act as bit of a secondary heatsink.

UPDATE: Set base timing to 10 BTDC and hooked the vacuum advance module to the vacuum advance port on my EMPI DFEV carb.

Car runs awesome! I am not sure how much advance this distributor has. It's the Vick offering. Autoricambi has 2 offerings: 1 has 22 deg of mechanical advance and the other has 31 deg of advance.

The heat shield on the exhaust manifold will extend the life of the vacuum advance module, but I'd like to do more to insulate it.
