1978 124 differential drain and fill

Post by check1 »

Hi there. I have a 1978 124....looking to drain and re-fill the differential prior to storing for winter. I have been searching on here for images of the drain and fill location as when I look at my differential it seems a tad different from other images on here (some show drain plug bottom center and behind sway bar). I am guessing on mine they are the two bolts are on the drivers side, the lower one and one further toward the front of the the differential housing. Does anyone have a image to share or a good description before I do something quite stupid...which I am prone to do. Thank you so much in advance! I appreciate all the knowledge here!

There are photos on this FiatSpider.com thread:

But I think it would be most helpful to you if you submitted photos of your differential and where you think it should fill/drain.

Sounds like someone changed the diff out from the original front load unit to the newer and to me less preferable rear load unit. The one shown in the link is the the front load diff.

That's the new style rear load diff that came out in late 1978.

The original front load diff does not have a bolt on inspection plate on the back as the third member bolts on from the front. The front load makes rebuilding easier as you can do all the critical setup on the work bench before you install it in the car.

To insert images you need to use the Img button above and then paste the image url in between the square brackets img]ImageUrlHere[/img

If you use the reply with quotes button to the right you will be able to see how I inserted the images.

Thank you for that info. Much appreciated and the info how to post. So, not to sound naive, but then are those the drain and fill bolts then? wasn't quite sure from your answer. Thank you.
