2,000 rpm loses power

Post by SeattleSpider »

I am wondering if anyone else has dealt with this problem. I have fuel injected 1980 Spider. I was driving along with everything running fine, and then the engine cut out and now will only idle at 1,000 rpm. It will accelerate fine to 2,000 rpm and then cuts-out and drop back to 1,000 rpm (repeatedly) The first time this happened I checked all the fuel injection sensor connections and the distributor pickup (wiggled the wires) and after many tries it fixed itself and I drove it home. I do not know why.

To be on the safe side I replaced the distributor pickup. I went out again yesterday and it happened again. Chaba at Auto Ricambi has suggested that it could possibly be the Throttle Position Sensor/Switch but that this was highly unlikely. I now plan to replace that, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Check the two ground wires that attach to the air plenum, by ring terminals, at top on the driver's side, rear mounting bolts. They may be frayed or broken, and the FI will not fire the injectors if they are not properly connected.

Thanks RRoller,
I got frustrated and it is at the mechanic's now (Ray at Performance Apex for those in the greater Seattle area), but he is not finding anything. I will have him check those wires. Picking it up this weekend and I am afraid to take it out on the road for fear it will happen again. What can I say, these little electrical issues are hard to track down - Frustrating!

Also, a possible culprit is a failure at the connection to the AFM, if it isn't sending the signal that the door flap is opening, it won't increase fuel flow through the injectors.

Check the connection at the ECU under the glove box, ensure clean and secure.
