Free flow exhaust?

Post by tomlianza »

Hi to all,
My local fiat mechanic mentioned that they could cut out the catalytic converter and replace it with a length of tube welded in place. I'm thinking that I might just want to put on a better exhaust system to begin with. I have a 1979 Fiat Spider 2000. Does anyone have any suggestions. The car has a new weber carb on it and it runs well, but I think a free flow exhaust will open it up a bit. I put a Borla on my Triumph TR-6 and it did improve the performance. Any pointers will be welcome

Thanks

Sure, it would help, (i did it) although I doubt you'ld notice much with that change only. Check first with your state inspection.

Use a 2 1/4 exhaust with a muffler and resonator. May need to resize carb jets.

On a 79 you probably have a single outlet exhaust manifold. Your best improvement would be a dual outlet manifold and down pipe from a FI spider. Bypassing your cat convertor with a test pipe would also help because it’s probably plugged up if original. The rest of the exhaust system is large enough for a stock engine. The original muffler and resonator are both straight through so there is no real restriction.

I replaced my entire exhaust last year with stock ansa replacements. The rear muffler and center resonator I found cheapest on amazon. My system is all stock other than a test pipe and chrome tip. It sounds great and has a good volume level. It also fits perfect and is easily removable.
