Trunk key not working!

Post by Nicketts »

Hey friends,
Took the car for a nice warm-up today, then drove to dinner. Got home, and can't open the trunk. I did tighten the bolts that hold the loop that latches below, on the trunk lid today (found it loose). Can this possibly affect the lock? Put the boot cover and towel in the back seat for now. Man, this car! Any thoughts?

Do you mean that the key will not turn, or will turn, but does nothing?
Assuming the former, mine has always required a little light, downward pressure on the luggage rack for me to be able to turn the key,...the trunk latches tight against it's gasket. And you just tightened the mechanism,...
I don't suppose that you'd be so lucky for that to be the solution.
Best of luck with it!
Todd.

Unfortunately, it is the latter. Key will turn, but does nothing. I'll try pushing anyway, thanks for the help!

If you find that you cant get in, drill a small hole, just large enough to accept an awl or small screwdriver, as shown here. Insert the awl and rock it back and forth horizontally, left and right. You should be able to catch the arm that will release the latch mechanism. Plug the hole with a rubber cap from the local hardware store and you are good to go. Hidden by the license plate anyway.

Great solution, but kinda hope I don't have to do that. I'm in awe of your ingenuity for figuring that out. However, I still wonder what the fix is... It did work fine when I put the top down to take the car for a drive initially, cause I got the boot out then. And that was well after I had tightened the latch on the lid. I'll have to wait until after work to check it. I'm hoping, like other glitches that seem to pop up, it will fix itself.

I didn't come up with it, but at any rate, once you get the trunk open, the entire mechanism presents itself pretty clearly.

Well I was lucky. A simple push on the trunk lid made it work. Just another quirk on the quirky Fiat road. Spiders Unite! Thanks friends.
