Hole in piston top - quick fix?

Post by tspin »

Discovered a 1/8 inch round hole in one piston on top of the exhaust valve cutout. Don't want to take the engine out of the car so planning to go under the car, undo rod and push piston/rod out through the top. The head is off. Its a 1995 cc from a 131 (1979)

Just planning to replace the one piston for now as the objective is to get the car running, after a 15 year sit, drive it around a bit on a temp plate and then evaluate level of future restoration/ investment.

Is this do-able?

Yes. Did it to mine. Not a hole but piston jammed tight due to dropping a 10 mm nut thru the spark plug hole. Head was OK.

Unless you only have one replacement piston why not do all four at the same time? In the long run I think you’d be happier if you did.

I say this because if you’re willing to do the work to get to the damaged one swapping out the other three would go pretty quickly.

thanks for the info

rebar...did the piston and connecting rod come out the top? looks like the rod big end might not fit

joeli... yes it seems getting the oil pan off is the big job here and you're right should do all 4 once the major task is done
