Engine starts fine no idle for a few minutes

Post by tima01864 »

The engine starts and runs fine, after a minute or so bogs down, I feed it gas for a few minutes and then idles fine. Any answers? Been bugging me for a while. Car had been rarely used in the past 15 or more years. 1983 2000 FI.

Going to pull the injectors this weekend and have them cleaned and tested. The PO replaced the AFM maybe 12 years ago, hoping that it is okay. Cost round 400.

If it run OK hot, then your injectors are OK. They are on and off switch.

I had same exact issue you described and fixed it by replacing the coolant temp sensor along with the two pin connector and about 8 in. of wiring, and replaced the vacuum check-valve underneath the rear axle. Another to look at is underneath the distributor cap, the pick-up assembly needs to have a gap of 0.5-0.6 mm (0.020 to 0.024 in.) between the stator pole and the trigger.

Thanks, Will take a look. Is it the coolant sensor or Thermo time switch? The coolant sensor is 17.00 and the TTS is 140.00 I replaced the broken Charcoal canister and the check valve. Not positive on direction of flow, Makes sense to be open, pulling vacuum out of the tank. Getting under there with the engine at idle i don't feel a pull on the vapor line. Thinking it just needs a reving engine for a stronger vacuum.
I will look at the pickup as well, Installing the valve shims so think it is a good time to have the injectors cleaned and tested.

I replaced the pick up. Ran like hell, checked and triple checked the gap. The Wires i sliced together at the thermal sensor came off, have to fix that better. I read this post again, fixed those wires started right up. Thank you Odoyle
