custom ac

Post by BammBamm »

So I am thinking of buying the Nostalgic air evaporator kit model UD - 160 and then pulling the compressor, condensor, dryer and office tube for some other model car that has the right size condenser and a decent volume compressor. The dryer would need to be replaced and the evap kit comes with the temp controls. I do have a factory fiat ac mount the tensioner pulley. Does anyone see any issue with that?

It should work fine. Nostalgic can talk you through the particulars, and they can sell you the compressor, condenser, and dryer for a pretty fair price too. My 1984 uses that same evaporator and I could post some pictures if you difficulty figuring it out. If you decide to make the hoses, eBay has the tools to swage AC fittings onto rubber hoses for fairly cheap as well. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

We have spent many thousands of dollars on air conditioning in one of these cars and found it lacking in every way. Past 85 degrees while in the sun the system can't keep you cool. The system is trying to fight a single layer top and lots of air gaps. Add in the massive power draw of running the compressor and the car feels like you're driving on glue. Hands down the WORST "upgrade" we ever tried to make work well.

Save you money and time and just forget it.

FYI - The link about the AC systems mentions a company that used to make a kit who changed hands and greatly altered the kit. It went from a near direct fit to a universal kit. Either way it doesn't keep up.
