Fiberglass sheeting on hood and trunk, WTF.

Post by Texsardo »

The paint and body man working on my Spider said when he first looked at the car, the cracks looked like it had had a Bondo or fiberglass repair on hood and trunk. Removing the luggage carrier, he noted (like I had before) that it looked like someone had bondo work around the holes. These had huge cracks with edges lifting slightly. Talked to him today and he said that the trunk and hood looked like there was a fiberglass sleeve on both. Funny, under the hood or trunk, no rust holes, dents or damage. Nothing to explain the al most 3/16 inch of fiberglass equally on top of hood and trunk. Head scratcher. Anyone else come across This?

I rejected a hood at Aspen Import Autos (Denver) for the same reason.
No obvious signs of need for repair from underneath, but fiberglass coating the upper surfaces, pretty much entirely. No idea why.
I haven't got a clue for P.O. reasons,...I just happened upon a similar circumstance, and thought I'd respond,...maybe it will help, somehow.
Could it be an old method of hail damage repair that can't easily be seen from the underside of the hood?

Don't know. Just seems out of normal unless hood had damage. Hail damage, don't know. Body man said it was done by someone that works with fiberglass a lot. He has taken it off down to metal and didn't find damage to warrant it. A few rust spots around luggage rack holes on trunk and some tiny rust spots along edge of hood where cracks were. Anyway, you witnessed it on another hood so I tend to think there was an underlying reason. Just don't know what it was. Thanks.

Took it down to metal,...excellent! You'll end up with a nicely finished hood.
I can't imagine finishing over a fiberglass repair (or whatever,...?).
I take everything down to metal and then make a plan for restoration. Best of luck with your's!
