Re: New Addition to the Hooptie Fleet
This is my 4th one, had a '71 R75/5, a '77 R100/7, and an '82 R100RS prior to this one. These are incredibly easy to work on, head and piston work is a piece of cake. The drive shaft is absolutely bullet proof if it has been kept properly lubricated, and the BINGs are tune and forget.
It is a '75. I like the /6 series because the instruments were upgraded from the /5, the gearbox went to 5 speeds from 4, front disk versus drum, and it still has spokes versus cast wheels (which I like, being an old guy). Juuuuuust vintage enough and still juuuuust modern enough at the same time for me. I loved my first bike, the R75/5, and looking back now, the /5 series is really the last product line where it identifies as real "old school" vintage. The /6 was the inflection point where BMW made a real effort to step into the future in the battle against the Japanese. Both won the battle in their own way. The first Goldwing was pretty much a targeted Japanese flat 4 Beemer.
Those K1200's bricks are amazing machines! I considered a K75, but I really am an airhead fellow (in more ways than one)
Pete

Re: New Addition to the Hooptie Fleet
It's cool! Has a nice vintage '70s look to it. Agreed on the spokes. I need to ride one of those - the center of gravity must be relatively lowered too. Brilliant design.

I see the Bings are "constant depression" carbs. That's a good description of the Amal's I'm working with!

Re: New Addition to the Hooptie Fleet
They tend to gyroscope a little, and torque CCW when revving, but it is very slight. They are unbelievably smooth when riding, or at least they WERE back in the day. Nothing could touch them for smoothness and quiet back then. Not sure how they match up against today's tech, but I would expect that today's Beemer Engineers have retained this important part of the brand. Smooth and quiet. Semi-upright riding position makes it easy to ride all day, or at least it did when I was a few dozen years younger.

IF....I was ever to get a motorcycle, it would have been a BMW. Too many ER nurses and trauma MD's in the family for that to happen..... . My youngest brother bought a project BMW last summer, but has sworn me to secrecy....
Nice bike, Pete! Cool little stable you've got going there!

Our lives are absolute hell, with very rare glimpses of light interspersed, and I just got tired of waiting for youth to arrive.
