Spyder?

I caught the fever for another breed of Spider, the "Corvair Spyder". Anyone have any experience with these?

There are a lot at the local shows, and sometimes 10 or more at the Bass Pro alternate Thursday Cruise in Foxboro. Very popular!

I had a 66, with 110 hp and 3 on the floor. It drove pretty good, and I never had to change the oil. Just put one quart in every week.

Buddy of mine had the supercharged version, he bought fan belts by the dozen and never left home without a couple of spares.

I'll have to get there. Let me know if you plan to make one of these Bass Pro Cruises. I do love my Spider - don't think I'd want to give it up.

My mom had a 66 Corvair Corsa. It had the opposed six cylinder with a dual carb setup and some performance upgrades. I got to drive it and raced a Porsche 924 around a winding road near Lake Tahoe. Here's my take on the car.

1. Plenty of power for a car that size
2. Quite roomy inside but the seats are flat and you slide around A LOT!
3. Cornering isn't bad, but my modern Civic would out perform it any day
4. Visibility (it was a hard top) was excellent
5. It was not a quiet car by any stretch of the imagination
6. The front was too squirrely for me. Despite the changes Chevy made in the Corvairs to the weight distribution, it was too light in the front for my taste.
7. Had the same rust issues as Fiats in many of the same places
8. Pretty simple to work on the car since it is an air-cooled engine
9. The heater is more of a joke than a feature
10. It prompted lots of comments from onlookers
11. My mom had no significant mechanical issues with the car once it was rebuilt because her fiance' was a Corvair aficionado.

Oh....I was able to keep up with the 924 the entire time. That was mainly because the guy in the Porsche was clearly and inexperienced driver. It was still a lot of fun at the time. I was young and dumb back then. LOL.
