Blocking off exposed intake port/1800 manifold

Finally get around to long-delayed project of installing 1800 manifold on my '79. I've read lots of posts about the need to block off the intake port that runs from the exhaust (original exhaust and tube still installed) and is left open by smaller intake but still not certain of best way to go about this. Would be interested to hear on what people feel are the best solutions.

Just did this not long ago. I blocked it on the exhaust side where the recirc tube goes into front of the head.
have also been told you could pull the tube from the exhaust manifold and use a plug; but sounds like NO ONE can get that fitting out of the manifold: I couldn't.

I read in an earlier post that someone used thin sheet metal to put where that exhaust tube connects with head to close it off. Is that the right idea? Or what did you use? Though I did read in a post that it was impossible task to remove the tube, I gave it a try a few days ago. No surprise, but no luck with that...

I had my metal worker son in law cut a piece of 1/8 steel in the shape of the end of the pipe and shimmed it into the gap like a gasket. I didn't trust thin sheet metal with the heat.

I managed to get the tube out of my 79's exhaust manifold. I cut the tube at the nut, impacted the nut off, then put an o2 plug in the hole. Nice clean install of 1800 head this way.

great idea. I have read that some just bend and crimp the pipe. can't imagine that is would be sealed.
Much cleaner your way.
I will need to replace all smog items every 2 years here in CA so I have a dumb looking pipe
