Can somebody advise me please?
I get 1 quick bright spark at the plug and the main wire that feeds the distributor cap when the key is turned but it stops sparking after that 1 initial time. It is a 1983 Fiat Spider with electronic ignition.
Thanks!

Mattyboy, check your ignition control module,it is located behind the ignition coil. It uses white dielectric grease underneath the heat-sink, which eventually dries up and the unit fails.

Thanks very much for the advice.
My brother who does some of my repair work says he tried that with the ICM along with putting in a new one. Is this the only part that could be at fault? he said he also replaced the ignition coil. Could the radiator sensor cause the ignition system to shut off if its running too hot or if the sensor is bad?

The coolant temp sensor at the front of the motor could stall then engine if the sensor is failing. Happened to me when trying to start the car on a hot days, replaced the sensor, rubber boot and connect, and about 6 in of wiring and solved issue. Might be the next thing to look at.

Diagnosis by part replacement can be both frustrating and expensive. You can dig yourself a bigger hole if you install incorrect or defective parts while trouble shooting. If the symptom is a loss of spark after starting stay with that symptom and run it to the ground. Move on to the FI side only when you are sure the ignition is sound.
If the spark is going missing, work the standard Magnlli electronic ignition issues. Are the pickup wires inside the distributor frayed? The advance plate on which the pickup is mounted moves every time the engine rpm goes above idle. Is the ignition switch overheating and cutting the voltage to the coil? Is the coil hooked up correctly? Are the ignition module and the engine block properly grounded? Use the search function to find more common ignition issues on 1979 and later Spiders.
