Stock air filter housing 1979

Post by wetminkey »

There is a flap that diverts the intake from warm air (from near the exhaust manifold), to cool air, coming through the larger intake 'snorkel'. I don't think that the flap's thermostat is working. Is there a way to test it? And if I need to, where can a replacement be found?
I find no info on the forum, and no sources on the internet,...
Thanks, all!
Todd.

What did you buy from them to redo your upholstery?

Thanks, and I'll see if I can tear into mine a bit to determine if it's truly non-functional.

Hmm m
So I took my air cleaner off the shelf and using the hair dryer I blew hot air in from the side that connects above the exhaust manifold. Things got hot to the touch but no movement of butterfly.....

But I do seem to recall there is a summer winter setting on the cleaner described in the owners manual

So sorry, no help but the wife was amused by the hair dryer episode.....

From what I recall, my 79 had separate piece which attached to the filter housing and sucked hot air above the exhaust manifold.

That's correct, Odoyle. I'm trying to figure out how to get it to QUIT sucking warmed air once the engine is at temp.
Dan, you're a nut! Geeze,...guess I am too!
Thank you for trying!
Anyway, I've cleaned, lubed, and repeatedly moved the mechanism enough that if it doesn't work now, it's certainly dead. I'll check the Owner's Manual,...Shop Manual has nothing. Although, a strange diagram that I ran across refers to Wide Open Throttle (WOT) and idle pathways,...I thought emissions, or vacuum. I'll check. Perhaps the damn thing only opens with warmth AND carb vacuum,...
I'll post if I find out.

It's called the air cleaner throttle valve. Owner's manual pg 30. And it operates freely and spring returns it.
I'll watch for operation while running and report back if I learn anything.

I ran a long screw from the bottom of the air snorkel to hold it permanently open. These cars warm up so fast that the diverter didn't really make that much of a difference.

Ha, ha! Believe me, I was planning a similar solution if I'm not satisfied with it's operation!
My big V8s do not require preheat to their 4bbl carbs, and they are HP beasts that need to warm up before driving (and about one full minute does it). My 4x4 FRANKENTRUCK goes in the snow all the time!
This inline 4 should do fine without, and I've seen exhaust manifold covers that do not have the preheater outlet on top. I'll look for one and dump the preheat setup, if I block the intake open.
Thanks spidernut!
