Okay,
So I just completed an MegaSquirt FI conversion on a 1980 spider 2000 (it was originally FI, but the previous owner switched to carb). I won't get into details of why/methods, etc.--short version: stock fiat internals, FI manifolds and parts--upgraded injectors...no spark control.
So I'm trying to tune this thing with a Bosch Narrowband (yeah, not a good plan...)--so I'm about to order a wideband sensor....here is the question:
Is it safe to put the WB sensor in the stock FI exhaust O2 location? I have seen some forum posts suggesting it might get too hot for a Bosch LSU4.9--has anyone successfully run a WB in the stock location for tuning purposes?

Buy a 14point7 WB and you will have a LED that will tell you. Innovate like to destroy sensor very fast...

Re: Wideband O2 Sensor location on FI 1980 Spider 2000
Cheers! I'm going to throw it in the stock location and see how it does--looks like the LSU4.9 temp ratings are actually not too far off of the same ratings for the OEM Bosch Narrowband O2 sensor that goes into it...I'll see how it goes and if necessary, will report back with any mods I end up needing. Sadly, I happen to have an Innovate LC-2 controller and Bosch LSU4.9 sensor on hand--and I have seen the a lot of folks reported fried sensors with the innovate LC-1...so if I fry a sensor, I'll be able to let everyone know!ORFORD2004 wrote:Buy a 14point7 WB and you will have a LED that will tell you. Dang...that is unfortunate--I will DEFINITELY keep an eye on things--how long did yours last before they died? Stock location on exhaust header (or are you running a turbo setup?)ORFORD2004 wrote:MTX-L for me. Fried two 4.2 and one 4.9 before changing...

Nevermind...I just looked at my MS post on the welcome boards and noticed you're running turbo...out of curiosity though--how far down is the bung for the WB sensor off the turbo header you're using?opamp wrote:Dang...that is unfortunate--I will DEFINITELY keep an eye on things--how long did yours last before they died? About 18 inches in front of the catalytic converter.

Awesome--that's really useful information. Based on what I've read and what folks are saying here (and your feedback ORFORD) I think I'll add in a weld-in bung for my O-2 sensor downstream to save myself the headache. I have a relatively conservative tune and am running EGO control from a narrowband...and it's actually working really quite well--but I'd just love to be able to collect more information using a WB...ORFORD2004 wrote:About 18 inches in front of the catalytic converter.

I have a wideband in the stock location. Seems ok. I have been running MS for almost 10 years.
I agree with Oxford, 14.7 is a nicer unit.
Previously, I ran an Innovative for 6 or 7 years so it definatley works. As with Orford, I went through a few sensors.
Switch to MS controlled ignition when possible!

HM! Well this gives me something to think about--haha! Maybe I will throw it in the stock location and see how it goes...burgandy81 wrote:I have a wideband in the stock location. Seems ok. I have been running MS for almost 10 years.

Now that I have it running controlling just fuel, I am really itching to get spark control!

I tried the stock position and the bung adapter that DIYatotune sells to help dissipate the heat. This didn’t work for long.
Welding a bung further down stream solved the problem.

Good to know--I think I'll probably end up relocating--for now mine seems to be fine; however, I think I'll probably do what was suggested above and move to a 14point7 and place it farther down as you suggest.

I will second that comment. I have an Innovate MXT-L O2 sensor and it has "eaten" two O2 probes already.ORFORD2004 wrote:Buy a 14point7 WB and you will have a LED that will tell you. Innovate like to destroy sensor very fast...
