Re-using old oil pan?

I am in the final stages of the engine rebuild but my old pans lining (paint?) was about half gone showing bare metal so I took a wire wheel and removed the majority of it, only some small areas under the baffle still have the black paint. My question is; Can I use it without the coating or will it rust and contaminate the oil? Or should I just get a new one from AutoRicambi?

I would think you could paint it with rustoleum and it would be fine.

Is this the inside or the outside of the oil pan we are talking about?

I'm with Chris. Oil being slung all over in there. But if you must paint it, I would use something like glyptol or a paint that is fuel/oil resistant (epoxy 2k) etc.

It is likely that it was painted on its inside in order to resist corrosion while waiting in inventory on a parts shelf. Certainly the hot oil will coat the entire interior of it. But oil eventually gets a little corrosive I think so the epoxy coating of the inside seems like a good idea.

Well, I was talking about the inside. It was originally coated with something but since has deteriorated away. I came across a similar inquiry on a hot rod forum and they suggested not to use paint either and if left unpainted to run the car at least once a week and it should be fine. As for the outside I painted with black engine paint. Thanks for the replies.

If I did anything it would be to powder coat the inside and use Rustoleum on the outside. I doubt that any rust would happen on the inside though.

Seems to me that the interior could easily corrode over a storage period, as the oil film flows down to the sump and the exposed metal is subject to the moisture content of air. Powder coating makes a lot of sense, or just buy a new one, they are not that expensive.
