Pops out of first gear

hey y'all
It's been a nice summer with my 77. Short drives every weekend, 500 miles on the rebuild engine feels like it's all good. One issue I'm having every now and then, is it will pop out of first gear ( violently). Can some tell me what the cause/fix is. Thanks

first gear is an odd one to be popping out. It's usually 2nd or 3rd. pay attention to when you shift into first. Does it feel like its going in all the way. The shifting forks have very soft pads and can wear and cause the tranny to not quite get into gear all the way. When you apply torque, it kicks it out. This problem will cause wear and damage fast.

Do you drive with your hand resting on the shift knob?
That can wear out the pads on the shift fork.
