adjusting fast idle

Post by smfg »

76 fiat spider. Rebuilt the engine and it started up the first time I cranked her over (what a relief). Now I'm trying to adjust the fast idle. I followed the instrutions in my Haynes and Brooklands book. Let her warm up, set idle speed, idled her up over 2500 rpms, pushed the pushbutton on the inter fender, released the trottle and rpms are about 50 rpms higher then normal idle.

Now i haven't adjusted my mixture screw (don't have a CO meter) would that effect it? I am also confused on were my fast idle adjustment screw is. my carb is alittle dif. then the picture in my Brooklands Book. I've messed with them all (while the pushbutton was still depressed) to try to get the fast idle to rise. Anyone with any ideas? Maybe if I post a picture someone could tell me were my fast idle screw is? Oh yea, the carb is new (rebuilt from Internatal auto parts). Just 3 years old and maybe a thousand mile on it. I'm not sure if it was set correctly before the engine rebuild, I sure it wasn't.

I'm out of town, and not near my '76 or my manual so I'll have to do this from memory. The idle mix. screw's on the drivers side of the carb. at the base. The old way of adj. it is to turn it in and out untill the rpms are the higest (either by ear or with a tach.) and then adj. the idle if necessary. The idle screw, I think is also on the drivers side toward the fire wall. I think that the fast idle screw's on the pass. side of the carb. You may have to move your over flow bottle to get to the screws. I'd take the air cleaner off to find the screws, but put it back on before you do any adj.
