Just bought my 72 a few weeks ago as a first project car. Among the many needs the fuel pump was bad. The car had been sitting for 5+ years and a considerable amount of gas back bled into the engine. I've since replaced the pump and changed the oil (as you can imagine, made a huge difference in the engine noise). The plan is to run the engine a few times and change the oil a second or third time, whatever it seems to need. I've only ran the car once since. I know the car is idling low, less than 500 rpm per the tach.
Here's the questions, any recommendations for additives or just continue with oil changes alone? Also, after the work thus far, a lot of rather fume laden white exhaust smoke has started (this was not happening before the work), could this be caused by bad fuel mixture, i.e. carb cleaning/idle adjustment needed? I'm hoping its just left over gassy oil burning off, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Bad Fuel Pump among other things
When I first got my 80FI, it had been driven very little and I noticed that the oil would turn very dark after only a few miles. Indicator of dirt and sludge in the engine. The prior owner averaged about 100 miles per year. I bet there were years at zero. I change the oil obsessively frequently, like every 500 at most. I started putting in about 1/2 a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to yhe crankcase just prior to an oil change, running it up to temp, and out for maybe a 10 mile run including highway speeds, then drain the oil. It came out absolutely filthy for awhile. But now the oil stays looking good for at least 1000 miles and leads me to believe that the crankcase has been thoroughly cleaned of grime and heavy deposits by this stuff, over time. The Rotella diesel oil that we use is also a high detergent oil, which helps as well.

I have always believed that white smoke, after the engine is up to full temperature, was sign of burning coolant. But I am not a professional mechanic at all.
My head gasket failures with a FI 124 have resulted in coolant leaking to the outside and not going internal.
