Re: Cup holder ....
Here's what I came up with. It's not as pretty as the one Pope suggested, but it costs less to maintain.
There is room between the holes for a rectangular cut out to use as a coin-sunglass-cigarette pack holder, but I opted not to do it because it ends up being a dirt trap and besides, there's already one underneath.
Still needs polyeurathaned.
What do y'all think?

Re: Cup holder ....
I had to go and ask what you thought!
I guess I have to take into account that you're old enough to to remember outhouses. As a matter of fact, I was thinking of building one at my place. When I get it done, I'd like you to drop in sometime.

Re: Cup holder ....
Ron, I think you are on to a great concept, but it looks a little bulky. Especially in a car that is anything but bulky in every other way. Given that cups are not particularly heavy - even with something in 'em - you could probably do essentially the same thing with 1/4" stock and smaller/lighter proportions around the ring.
That makes it a little more delicate to fabricate, and possibly more likely to break if an 8 yr old kid steps on it when climbing from the front to back (a problem I would have, but not everyone will), but I think will give you a better look in the car.

Re: Cup holder ....
You're right Steve. Bulkiness was a consideration, but I know most of it's use will be as an armrest and I wanted it to hold up to that.
If I get too many nays I will probably go back to the drawing board. Or only bring it out of the trunk when no one else is around.
Thanks for the input.

Re: Cup holder ....
Hey ron
I like the idea of having a armrest and some cupholders @ once
but why trouble yourself making one ?
here's a possible solution
It can be yours for only 22$

Interesting Tappy. I wonder how wide it is. Mine is 5-1/2" and it's a tight fit.

Ron, your cup holders are good. They are well crafted, but I agree with the coment that they don't necessarily match the design of the car -- but neither does a lot of other stuff that people do to their spiders. What's nice about your design is that it is very useful, and can be easily stored in the trunk if the looks are a concern.

I like your idea Ron. It looks 82'ish. But, can you legally build a working outhouse? Ours have to be grandfathered in, so I'm sprucing mine up for historic reasons.

Re: Cup holder ....
Exactly Denise! It kind of goes with the big bumper look. As far as legal goes, I'd guess you're right. That means the pool is the only thing left for Mark to "drop in".
And how many kids are we talking about Mark?

Re: Cup holder ....
Hey Ron ,
I like it.In my case it would be used as an armrest way more than as a cupholder. All of us carpenters have manly ,muscular arms that cant be supported with wimpy 1/4'' stock!! Once you have it completed ,I would like some detail as to the mounting. Is it easily removed, and did you use the rear 'ashtray' to mount it?

Re: Cup holder ....
Wow! Thanks Craig. I figured it would take a carpenter to appreciate the asthetics of it. Or an artist such as Ace. It just drops into place, easy in/easy out. The rear leg rests on the tunnel which keeps it stable and level:
It's 1X6 Poplar, 11-1/2" long, 3-1/2" high. It will get a pad of some sort to lay on top of it which will make it just right to rest a (muscular) arm.
