Cost to Repair/Replace Fuel Injectors

Post by esodu »

I need to get the injectors replaced on my 1980 Spider and was wondering what a fair price would be to have it done in a shop. Anyone have an idea of a reasonable cost for this?

Price could vary a lot depending where you are located. You might post your location maybe someone in your area could respond

It's a pretty easy job to do yourself. I pulled my entire fuel rail off the car so that I could clean up my injectors and replace all of the old rubber hoses.

The FI connectors pop off once you remove the metal clips (I use a small scratch awl to get them loose). I cut my old fuel hoses to get them out of the way, including the one going to the cold start valve (CSV). Assuming your hoses are original to the car, they're way overdue for replacement anyway. Bulk hose is readily available, but make sure to get good quality FI hose that can take the higher pressures. Then there are just the four nuts which hold the FI retainers to the manifold to take loose; these you kind of have to do by 'feel', but it's easy enough. Once you've done all that the fuel rail will pretty much just pull right out.

I cleaned mine up at the kitchen table and replaced all of the rubber fuel hoses (search the forum for tips) at the same time. My injectors were still good, but new aftermarket ones can be had for about fifty bucks each. New(new old stock) Bosch ones are hard to find and considerably more expensive, but you might find some rebuilt ones on the internet. Make sure to replace the FI seals while you're at it. All of our vendors carry them, and they're cheap.

I'm guessing that a professional mechanic would have about 8 hours into such a project, (I did mine over a weekend), so do your own math as to the labor costs. But doing it all myself cost me less than $75 in parts.

I had mine done with very quick turnaround by OK Injectors and the cost was about the same, but in US$.
