Fiat 2000 engine + 1400 Exhaust manifold + what headpipe?

Post by SteveLandry »

I have a 1970 Spider. It now has a 2000 engine. The engine block is too tall for my tight-fitting exhaust header from the old car, and the cast 2000 manifold has too many studs and ports sticking out of it. The cast 1400 manifold is still a similar setup but is smoother and not as tall. It does fit the head.

Is there a factory head pipe I can use for this application, or do I need to start fabricating? I imagine height here is still the dominant factor, plus only four studs on the manifold.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

I have a 73 spider with a 2 liter. I purchased an after market exhaust header from international auto which is no longer in business. Also, if you can find the cross member from a 1979 injected or later, I have been told that this lowers the engine. The cross members are interchangeable.

On my 73 I needed to rotate the distributor ~ 90 deg CW to avoid dist cap rubbing on the hood.

In hindsite I wish I Had switched to a 1756 vice the 2 liter

I have a stock downpipe from a 1979 model. It has the earlier-style 4 bolt flange to the manifold, and is routed for the passenger-side exhaust with the converter under the seat. I was going to use it on my 1800 engine, but since it's for a 2 liter it's too tall and the amount of work to make it fit wasn't worth the hassle. If you think it will work for you, I'll send it to you for the cost of shipping. Let me know, Ian.

The 73-74 down pipe is what I used on my many 2L conversions of non-2L spiders. Not sure if you also need a 73-74 exhaust manifold but in any event it fit fine with no issues due to the taller block of the 2L. No need to change crossmember.

Piperstan, i found a small bubble hood for the car, so there are no interference issues.

Ian, thanks but it would take too much cutting and welding since the '70 does not run a cat.

Carl, thanks for the information. It's just what I was looking for.
