Black wood dash panels?
Black wood dash panels?
So I'm thinking of removing my wood dash panels and painting them black. My only concern is that if I sand them a bit, is there a laminate layer that or will the wood grain splinter?

Re: Black wood dash panels?
i would recomment using a foil to cover them , it gives great results. You can take a look here

Hey Nick, nicktheviking wrote:So I'm thinking of removing my wood dash panels and painting them black. My only concern is that if I sand them a bit, is there a laminate layer that or will the wood grain splinter?
I'm getting a set of panels sent up to me so I can hand it off to my engineering dept to draw up in autocad. Then I'm going to send it over to my CNC deptartment to cut out some new wood for me and a few others. Now the nice thing about my companies CNC machine is that it can handle anything from aluminum to wood (we mostly use it for plastic) So if you'd prefer not to mess up your original wood, I can probably whip you up (for a small cost) a set of wood out of nice hardwood or even black acrylic.

A set of black acrylic dash panels sounds awesome. Let me know what kind of costs you're looking at.Jazgeek wrote:Hey Nick, nicktheviking wrote:So I'm thinking of removing my wood dash panels and painting them black. Ha! And I thought they were real wood! I would like to do that! I saw some made out of Bird's Eye Maple on here that were beautiful!
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!
Re: Black wood dash panels?
hey, any thought on the reflectivity of that black acrylic? Sounds real neat to me, except i am already squinting when i drive east in the late evening due to the sun reflecting off the nardi wheel and the chrome bezels on the gauges.
I would really consider buying a set as well, which style will you build? five or six gauges, early or late model?
lemme know whatcha think about the reflection... then shoot me a cost as well.

Re: Black wood dash panels?
the reflectance value of stock poly or acrylic black would be pretty high... ie very glossy. There are plenty of frosted film that can be overlayed to dull the glare and then there's the old diffusion trick.... sand it with an orbital. Only problem with that (and it probably won't be in black) is that if it's white it bets very dirty very easy.
If you want black, your best bet would probably be something like mdf.... nice and paintable
please you all, shoot me a PM if you'd like a set done with your preferences. I'll start a list and get back in a few weeks with some estimated costs.
I do have another idea that I'm getting one of my engineers to cad out for me.
I bought an armrest from an 80, I'm trying to figure out the best way make them out of wood. I think that would really show off the beauty of the interior .... can you tell I like my wood interior?

Nick, On your black dash; Pull the panels, clean well with acetone, sand with 120 grit, clean again with acetone, and glue some black leather on with an industrial rubber cement. 3M makes a fantastic yellow glue. I have done a set like this and it looks bad ass. No glare either, chrome bezels finish it off. Cost, maybe 25.oo in materials. Giff

Nick, check online under leather making supplies. Also check locally, like Michels or a similar craft supply haus. I found mine at a craft supplier. Thin is in because of the edge seen when opening glove box. Cut to fit w a SHARP razor knife. Finish off edge with a black sharpie. Also make sure u press leather flatly with good weight o night, good luck,Giffnicktheviking wrote:That sounds cool too... any idea where I could get some black leather like that?giffordo wrote:Nick, On your black dash; Pull the panels, clean well with acetone, sand with 120 grit, clean again with acetone, and glue some black leather on with an industrial rubber cement. 3M makes a fantastic yellow glue.
