crankshaft question

Post by seansxd40 »

First let me say I'm new to the forums. I just recently bought 2 Fiat Spider 2000's. A 79 and 80. The engine in the 79 was run without oil and spun a bearing then sent to the junkyard. Thats where they fell into my hands. So I need to know if turning the crank would require special machinery or if any quality machine shop could do it. Or if theres a good machine shop in the Texas to Florida area?

any shop that turns cranks should be able to do it, nothing special about the Fiat crank. Plan on buying the main and rod bearings from the same place that grinds the crank. If a rod seized on it, plan on replacing that rod and getting the others resized

Thanks for the reply. I've checked my local race shops and none of them have a crank grinder in house. So still looking. One more question, any suggestions on a place to buy remand or used rods from?

I wouldn't worry so much about finding a race shop, any crank grinder can do an adequate job. There is an engine rebuilders association that may be able to direct you to someone local, try AERA for info. IAP lists sets of 4 new rods, kinda pricey though. Get yours checked first

Thanks for all the help and advice. I found a few local grinders without an hour that I'll call tomorrow to check on pricing. As far as the rods go I hope they check out fine, if not I'll go from there. I've been working on V8 pontiacs for the last 5 years and racing for the last 2 so the fiat and a 4 cylinder in general are new territory.
