Motor is in now and I am working on wiring and linkage and such.

Should have it back together this weekend..

Latest hangup is the carb was messed up so we got a kit from Weber.

Trying to figure out linkage as we don't have the old carb anymore to scavenge off of and can't find good pictures of how to do the linkage for replace the 34 DMSA weber with the K518 Kit ( 32/36 DFEV ? ) The linkage pieces in the kit seem to be for converting a cable operated linkage, and not a ball and socket style. I THINK I Need this piece off the DMAS and its rod to the other piece ?

< EDIT.. NO that piece off the DMSA wouldnt have helped as it didn't have the choke rod linkage hole. Need the universal bit below.. >

Well.. found this universal piece on a old Weber at Sports Car Workshop in Richmond.

Unlike the original piece from the DMSA ( They had one of them too ) this one had the spot for the choke linkage. Not sure where you could find one again.. but at least I found it for us. Must have been a old universal piece from years back.

Looks like it will do the trick along with a short linkage rod from a VW.. got that on order.

Hmm since I am finding everyone still a bit silent on the matter. For future reference.

Here is how I did it, using the universal bit on the end..

and the original rod and arm. I Bent the arm of the original a bit to align with the new universal cam and ball

Then I got some rod, as the original linkage bar was too long. and shortened up the crossover

Speaking of done..

New ( To it ) motor, with new gaskets and bottom end bearings

New flywheel and clutch

New heater core and cable assembly

New hoses, etc..

Detailed the engine bay a bit too and simplified the wiring.. I think it would have been simpler to rewire with a universal wiring harness ( actually know it would have been ) I know at minimum it would have been neater. Hopefully no one has to go behind the dash ever again. It ain't pretty back there. but it works.

Not quite the original.. this is what it looked like after i had reinstalled the old head back in october before it decided to drop the valve the following day ( Yes I know I have the cam pulleys on backwards taht was fixed before I put the belt on ;) ). But it gives you an idea of how bad the engine bay and all the wiring looked. It was worse ( much worse and much dirtier 5 years ago ) . So bad I never took pictures.

I think we're all looking at that exhaust manifold and suggesting a header or a 4 into 2 manifold.

Done.. New motor runs like a champ.

Finally got to welding up the floors and rockers to give it some strength and replaced the rear end links.. ( they were toast ) runs and drives like a new car. OR as well as it did when new.

With ONE exception.. after putting about 30 miles on it, I was taking a sharp corner when the car just died all power went bye bye.. wouldnt start.

Before I could find a place to pull over all the power came back and I was able to start it and go on.

The thing is ALL power went.. the radio is wired to battery power side of ignition switch and it went too.

Only happened to me this once..

All the cables look good and I couldnt find anything loose. Only thing I can think of is the battery needs to be tied down better ?

Typical problem and I can look somewhere specific ?

I had a buried wire that was uncapped and would short to ground during hard left turns making everything go dark and it took quite some time to track it down. When a previous owner put the diesel in delete or cap was not in their vocabulary so they just disconnected and snipped leaving heavy gauge bare wires dangling all over the place.

I want to thank I work for beer for restoring "Mario"...no issues... The perfect fun car...last test ..road trip to a dcfiat.org event..cannot thank him enough..great Fiat guy formed from an OpelGT guy.
