Simple Questions

Post by Teletom »

Hey all I have some more questions for you before I am finished with the engine. I have a late model 1800 I am rebuilding and I have the cam towers back on. Cylinders are all level so I didn't damage the valve when attaching cam towers. Now for the tricky stuff, I need help making sure everything is in the correct position.

I'm assuming that I rotate the crank so the exhaust side has the #1 valve open and opposite on the intake side? and the set the #1 cylinder to TDC?

Thanks for any input, I read the Guy Croft post about timing on the abarth forum but it is a bit over my head. Also does anyone have a more comprehensive toque value list that what Haynes has. Need to make the the front and rear seal holder are torqued correctly as I had a shop rebuild my bottom end.

Also I have a very tiny spring that the shop gave back to me with old parts, maybe half an inch long and cant find any info about it.

Any help is appreciated.

Not sure what you are saying about timing. You need to line up the cams and then the crank to their appropriate timing marks. Make sure you don't clash 2 valves into each other.
When all the timing marks are lined up the distributor will be firing #4 cylinder.

I just put a Chart up on Face Book under "THE FIAT SPIDER" group that summarizes the steps visually. Search in that group for postings by PETER LENK and it will pop up. It is a bitmap that you can download. Very easy. It is for a 2L engine but the basic steps are common, and it will supplement the great info given here by Csaba and others.

Check your distributor for a missing weight spring.
