I had a friend bring me his 1970 El Camino. A little over a year ago he put a GM performance crate motor in it. This version came with a holley 4V carb, so dual float bowls. For the past year he's driven like an old lady, never getting the secondaries open. So, the ethanol laden fuel in the secondary bowl turned to gel while the primary functioned normally. Here's a pic showing the two bowls and metering blocks side by side. It took some work but I got the bowl and metering block cleaned out and looking like new. The tank received a dose of Carb Defender to treat the metal in the fuel system, and the owner got a suggestion to drive it like he stole it once in awhile

Ultrasonic cleaner is a good way to clean carburetor.
Re: Why we love ethanol, no fiat content
since the passages were plugged solid, I think the ultrasonic cleaner would have taken a long time to work. I've got my own methods

Wow, so that is with the car being driven fairly regularly, just never with WOT? Amazing.

What are the symptoms when the secondaries don't open? Is there hesitation at high speed or is there just a lack of oomph?
Re: Why we love ethanol, no fiat content
if he would have depressed the throttle enough to open the secondaries the car would have fallen on it's face-no fuel flowing at all in those two venturis. The car didn't run poorly, he brought it in because fuel mileage was about 10mpg and the carb was leaking everywhere
