Custom gauges -- some tech questions

Post by nicktheviking »

So in between stints of working on my spider, I'm planning a project for when I get around to the non-vital stuff.

I'm planning to replace the OE gauges with a set of aftermarket. ('Heresy,' I hear you cry.)

I think I've settled on Autometer's Sport-Comp series. Couple of questions:

Oil Press. Gauge -- Should come with its own sender. Easy enough to install.

Fuel Level Gauge -- Am I correct in thinking the OE fuel level sender is 0-90 ohms? Can probably re-use existing wiring.

Tachometer -- Should be able to re-use existing wiring.

Speedometer -- Here's where I'm uncertain. Does anyone know if I'll need a speedo cable adapter? Would this be a good time to install a new speedo cable?

Water Temperature Gauge -- I'm going electrical on this one. Anyone know if I can use the OE sender or if I'll need to install a new one?

Here's a rough idea what it would look like, using the stock photos.

ahhh... i feel better now.

unless you are already experiencing issues with the existing speedo cable, i don't think that a new cable will add any life to the setup. i can tell you that the existing cable is JUST BARELY long enough for the stock gauge. if your gauge is shorter...best of luck.

i would not automatically assume that the oil pressure gauge comes with its own sender. easier to check first, than be sorry later.

and, to answer the other questions, you should have the specifications for the gauges at hand. finding a Autometer expert at this forum will not be an easy task without having the spec sheets for each gauge.

I know the Autometer fuel gauge is 0-90 ohms, I was wondering what the output on the OE fuel level sender is.
