82 Spider rebirth

Post by kustomlarry »

Scored an 82 Spider that I pulled out of a garage after 20 plus years. The car is an automatic and rust free. Original paint except the trunk lid.

Apparently the previous owner threw the timing belt. Motor will crank but distributor does not move. I pulled the plugs to do a compression test and I have gotten zeros on the first two cylinders. I just stopped and walked away. Is there anything I should be looking for or doing something wrong?

Throwing a belt could have bent the valves which could result in the effected cylinders holding zero compression...

But don't walk away just yet, there's still hope. Rebuilding one of these engines isn't all that difficult.

Others will chime in.

An 82 if stock will not bend vales. From what you said the cams are not turning. Put a new timing belt on it and then do a compression test and go from there.

You don't say, but we assume you have replaced the timing belt and the marks on all 4 pulleys line up?

A stock motor wouldn't bend the valves? I figured they would bend them when the cams stopped.

a stock 2 liter is non-interference as far as valves are concerned, but the auxiliary shaft's fuel pump lobe can hit the #2 conrod. In bad cases it can put a hole in the side of the block.

Well I finally got out to play with the motor last night. I took off the timing belt cover and found the belt to still be on the motor. I took a wrench and turned then motor and it turns and I can hear compression in cylinders which is nice. After the second squeeze the motor stops turning. I turn the motor the other way and it does the same thing. Any thoughts? Not sure where to go from here.... thanks.

Does this sound like what it is and how do I address it?
