Temp Gauge Sensor

I went out for a 15-20 minute drive tonight and the temp gauge never made it to 190. It stayed at about 1/4 of the gauge instead of the normal 1/2. Where is the sensor for the temp gauge?

Infrared thermometer is a great tool for checking overheating problems.

Maybe. I felt the hoses connected to the thermostat, but none felt hot. I'm pretty sure the coolant level is good, but am going to verify anyway. Is there a way to check if the thermostat is working properly?

If the thermostat is working, the heater hoses should get hot before the radiator hoses. Assuming the heater valve is set wide open. If everything is just warm, you might try tapping the thermostat a few times to see if it closes. For sure check the coolant level.

You can remove the thermostat and boil it in a pot of water on the stove, watching temp with a simple plumber's digital thermometer, but don't ever use that pot for edibles again.
