Oil / Vapor separator

Post by architect »

Is there any chemical treatment to clean the oil vapor separator?

It looks like you have to pull the intake manifold off to access the single bolt on a 78. There is literally a 1/4" clearance between the two.

Also, where does the flame arrestor go? Is it in the actual separator or so you place it in the hose towards the intake? (neither of my hoses had one)

Thanks!

I don't remember specifically on a '78, but i have never taken the manifold off to take this off. Once the bolts unscres (~1/2") it is completely loose, ie. it only has to come straight up 1/2" as it unbolts, then it can be moved sideways.

Csaba,

It's super tight in between the bolt / manifold... I've seen pics of other years with much more clearance.

I will give it a look tonight, thank you

Update:

As stated above, I was able to pull the separator out by loosening the 13mm bolt.

It was ridiculous how close the head of the bolt is to the intake manifold.

After many quarter turns of the wrench - and a good smack to loosen it up, it slided out!

Now I'm soaking it in degreaser- then re-installing with Csaba's fire resistor!

I was not aware of this oil/vapor separator. Is this something I should look into removing and cleaning up?

I will snap a photo of mine later tonight..

After 40 years, it gained plenty of crap in it... so I would recommend it!

Also replace the gasket / hose while your there. The vendors here sell them for fairly cheap

Yes! Intake side, lower front of block, large hose goes up to air cleaner or FI throttle body.

I see it! Right next to my mechanical fuel pump. And it is possible to remove it without taking off the intake?

Yes it should be. The bolt that holds it down is very long, from memory maybe ~3" :?: maybe that is the problem, getting it up high enough to release the top cover :?: But I don't remember removing the intake to get this off and clean it. That doesn't seem right. Of course pull the 2 hoses and clean them too. The spring clips (if you still have the original spring clips holding the hoses on, they are a PITA!) The small hose that bends 90 deg is particularly charming, as far as I remember.

Too cold out there! I'll let you know how it goes when things warm up. Pete, any plans for Millis this year let me know.

It is by far the best that I am aware of. Lots of variety, food, always a surprise vehicle of some sort or another shows up. But NEVER two Fiats, Hahahahahahah!!!
