Noisy Fuel Pump

I have a 1985 124 with an irritating noise caused by the fuel pump.

A new Bosch pump was fitted but noise is the same. The problem, according to the mechanic, is not the pump itself but vibration through the bodywork caused by the operation of the pump.

The noise is present whether idling or foot down. Engine runs well so don't think a problem with fuel supply as other discussions suggest.

Has anyone else had similar problems and found solutions?

I may suggest rubber grommets to help absorb/buffer the vibrations





there is also a rubber strap that goes around the pump itself

Thanks for that. Is there two photos? I can only see one showing the strap.

Are these readily available or bespoke?

There are rubber fuel pump mount/bushings http://www.autoricambi.us/product/FI0-0 ... --Bushing/ that you need along with the rubber sleeve around the pump.

I now know what should be there, and its not what is there!

I will get fittings and see (or hear) what happens.

The photo below shows the newly installed pump. The pump is too small for the fitting and rubber has been used to "fill the gap". There are no signs of grommets as far as I can see.



Clearly its not right but now thinking that, as its the same noise as the previous pump, perhaps should get the FI system tested?

The rubber should extend all the way around the pump, 360 degrees in its cradle.

What Roller said - that rubber bit you've got folded up under the pump should be wrapped around the pump. Then it would isolate the pump from both the bracket below and the car body above and probably put some space between the bracket and the rod it's currently resting on.

Thanks to all for the advice.

I have finally got the problem solved. I took the car to three garages to find the solution. Two garages just changed the fuel pump and the mechanics basically shrugged their shoulders when the noise problem persisted.

The issue, identified by garage 3, turned out to be faulty electronics resulting in the pumps that had been fitted being overworked and hence noisy. Once the electrics were fixed (minimal cost) the current pump is now totally silent.

Update (29th September, 2017): I have now discovered the last paragraph is totally incorrect caused by my poor Spanish and not speaking to the person who worked on the car in person!! Actually the problem was caused by a blockage in the pipe from the fuel tank and the pump overworking. pipe replaced and fuel tank cleaned. Problem solved. Not sure yet whether long term solution might be to replace tank as further corrosion could be an issue.

I installed a Walbro high pressure fuel pump that came with some parts in my 83 (in a box with a reciept that said it was purchased in Moab, Utah!), new bosch filter, rubber isloator pads, and fuel filter before the pump.

I have finally spoken to garage and this time the mechanic who worked on the car. The car is in Spain and some things were lost in translation unfortunately and the issue wasn't electrics as had been explained to me (or at least I thought) by someone who didn't work on the car!!

It turns out that the fuel pipe from the tank had debris in it. This was replaced and the fuel tank cleaned. The fuel pump then worked silently.

I like to install a filter before the fuel pump. I use a NAPA 3248. I would think you could find one as I think the Bosch fuel pump is used on many other cars and some of them had a filter before the pump.
