Another engine trans install question

Just re-hashing old subject of engine trans install:

Anybody have experience installing engine/trans together while car is on lift. I would like to install my '82 turbo motor complete with trans. I think I can drop it in while car is up on lift- my engine hoist is a clarke forklift. I plan to have car a few feet off ground and lower engine trans in tailshaft down then raise tailshaft with trans jack guiding shift lever thru hole... does this sound possible?

I dropped the entire engine and transmission into my '80 as one piece via the top. The car was on jack stands which provided some swing room for the tail shaft. For better clearance, I suggest that you first drain the trans oil and remove the top plate and shifter assembly, then cover the opening with a plastic bag or cardboard to keep any crud out. You can add the transmission oil through the top from inside the car later on. Be sure to use the correct type or you will ruin the yellow metal synchronizers (search the forum for more info). And if not done so already, now is the time to inspect/replace the clutch and pressure plate assembly.

I also placed a piece of plywood under the receiving area so that the tailpiece could safely "skid" towards the rear. I used a traditional engine hoist, but it also has a engine leveling device that is invaluable to help tilt the engine assembly at the correct angle upon entry into the bay. It is relatively cheap and available at Harbor Freight. Failing that, ensure that you have a few extra hands to help manipulate the assembly as it's lowered.

First your pics need to be on a host site...not just your computer. Open that image on the host site and click on the address to copy it.
Then go to this site and click Post Reply, then click Img button above....and while the new button is flashing in the text box, insert (paste) your image.

Open individual image, right click and select View Image Info and from the window that next opens right click on the image link that is already highlighted and select copy. Paste link between the words img and /img in square braces:

My sequence:
1)first removed steering xmember
2) car on lift about 2' off ground
3) Engine on end of forks with harbor freight leveler
4) ended up removing shift assembly, alt, turbo exhaust adapter
lowered in inching forward and raising tail of trans with floor jack. waste gate linkage bent platform that airbox sits on but no big deal.
I had to lower tailshaft after install to get shift assembly installed.

I'm also planning to utilize the "install from below" method of getting engine/trans in place. Question: what did you use to lift the engine/trans up into the engine bay? What did you use to lower the car down once the engine/trans/suspension were in place? I'm always nervous seeing engine/trans combos being slotted down from above especially considering a brand-new paint job. I'd much rather touch up bottom paint or undercoating than try to fix a highly visible exterior panel. My spider is currently atop this dolly and freshly painted. Can't really tell from this photo, but the front section of the dolly is removable so there's no interference with bringing the engine/trans in from below. I was thinking of getting the engine/trans/crossmember all assembled and underneath, then using a large engine hoist to pull it up into the engine bay. Maybe assist at the transmission with a floor jack in the back... What I haven't figured out yet is how to get the car down off of the dolly once it has suspension/wheels/tires front & rear. Any suggestions based on what you've done? In removing/installing the engine/trans from below, are there accessories that won't fit through the engine compartment and should be removed (starter, alternator, etc.) and installed later?
