Air flow meter adjustment

Post by sigkadetm »

Here is what I got. I connected a exhaust gas analyzer as directed from the service manual. Disconnected the O2 sensor and backed off the throttle position sensor. Let engine and meter warm up to normal operating temperature then connected meter probe. Meter instantly went way lean then settled out to about 15 or around .1% CO. I screwed the AFM adjustment screw to about a 1/2 turn out from closing. The reading richened out to about 13.4 or around .4% CO. So I guess I have to back off on the tension wheel a few clicks so I could richen the mixture a little more to get between .5% to .9% CO. Need assurance.......

Not my area of expertise, but I'd be careful about changing the tension on the air flap in the AFM. In my mind, that will cause changes in mixture at open throttle settings, which could cause over-lean or over-rich conditions when driving (not idling). Too rich can cause problems with cat, to lean with pre-ignition. Neither good for your engine. I teed-in a digital volt meter to my O2 sensor to watch voltage output under actual driving conditions and used that to adjust the AFM. Just my 2 cents.

Kirk, is there an explanation of how to perform this procedure, that you could share?

Thanks.

Adjusted air flow meter today and set it at 7% . Had to back off spring tension about 8 notches. Air bypass is open about one turn. Engine is now running super and the capacitor fix for the tachometer did the trick.

Did that major ice storm a short while back cause much trouble? I am looking for Winter RV sites; planning a trip down the coast very soon, but I love the mountains too, and wonder what the climate is like there in the Winter? Is it RV-able all year round?

The worst time to go would be Feb. After that the danger of ice should start to diminish. It could be pretty bad driving. The storm did minimal damage so you are good to go in the mountains. The piers at Myrtle beach got severe damage.

Thanks for the info! It seems like we need to go at least as far south as Charleston to comfortably RV for the Winter. :?:
