Correct Iron Cross Rim Color?

Post by mbovino »

My car has four 13" Cromodora "Iron Cross" rims. I believe them to be original and never repainted since the car sat untouched for at least 25 years. I want to repaint the rims, but want to be sure of the correct color. They are faded, but presently a pale gold color with the "tabs" between the spokes painted flat black. Does this seem right? I've seen others in silver but don't know if that is original for the year. Wish that I could easily post a photo. Thanks.

I'm not sure that the Iron Cross Cromodora rims were ever painted like that. All I've seen were silver/grey with no black.

I've seen at least three factory color schemes, one being gold. Not sure if gold was ever stock on Spiders, tho, but it could have been.

1981 Fiat Spider iron cross rims came one way only in California - silver. That's what my car had when new in 1981 and the only option other than the steel rims that were also silver.

originally it's a flat charcoal grey, not flat black. don't ask about color code, it's pointless. take any color code and go to three different paint shops and you'll get three different colors

Hi

Sorry if this is a little off topic but how rare are 14" iron cross wheels for the Spider? I picked up a set and powder coated them myself with a powder called silver lining It is a nice silver metallic Might be looking for a 5th one as a spare but haven't checked yet if it will fit in the spare tire wheel well. My car is an 81

Thanks, Rick

14" Iron Cross were on the 81 anniversary spiders. I know the 13" (CD-16) Iron Cross were optional on at least the 80's and not sure what years prior or after. Regarding paint schemes, I've seen OEM Fiat brochures with the scheme above (charcoal strip / silver) as well as all silver. I think the charcoal strip was to make the opening LOOK bigger as at any distance it looks like a big hole in the mag. I wonder if they wanted bigger holes...but they'd knew they'd be structurally unsound any larger, hence the charcoal paint "illusion". I opted to go all silver on mine, figuring I may dabble with some plastidip if I want to black out the strips to make the holes look larger. I did polish the raised outline lips on my wheels and left the rest flat. I like the look, it's very subtle and looks great IMO. YMMV.

Just a bit of trivia - I paid $400 for mine in 1981 when I bought my car new. The retail price of the rims was much higher. In California, there was only one option - silver/grey.
