Yes, she was the talk of the nation when that happened. She was quite the looker. A hottie in my eyes, needing to unleash from the "crown jewel of the federal penitentiary system", she, referencing to the official residence of the PM

I was living in Vancouver, BC, during the days of the 'War Measures Act'. It was a bit scarey, primarily due to the newspaper and TV news from Montreal. It's my opinion that the FLQ successfully blackmailed the Canadian Government, and the result being, that the province of Quebec 'is' today separate from the rest Canada, even though they have never officially carried out their threat to leave. They remain a country within a country.

Yes, she was a 'looker'! Margaret Sinclair and her sister lived in an apartment across the hall from myself and my then wife. We shared 'some good times' with them. Margaret was very much the party girl, while her sister was much more reserved.

One night, after being out for dinner, my wife and I arrived home to find our apartment building surrounded by TV crews and police. We were kept from entering the building until our ID was provided, The police wouldn't tell us what was going on. It was her sister (Janet ) who rushed to our apartment and broke the news to us. Margaret and Pierre Trudeau had announced their engagement. The police were there to keep the news hounds away from Janet.

The joke that followed their wedding night was Pierre asking Margaret if it was 'in'? She replied "justin".

Interesting times!
Dave.

Spiderdan this one is for you:
One of the oldest delis in Canada, currently partly owned by the Dion-Angelil family.
Also one of the few places that the Language Police backs off concerning the " 's " in Schwartz's

In November of 1965,  the Canadian assembly plant opened in Saint Broono QC.  Advertising now boldly proclaimed that Renault's products were now "built in Canada " and Renault 8 offered more safety, comfort and economy than any other car in its class.

That first picture reminds me so much of "A Shot In The Dark". Wonderful pics, thanks for sharing all this. I have a bunch of really old Boston pics if anyone is interested, I will post them on another thread. Kinda quiet around here these days.

The lunch counter reminds me of "The Sunshine Dairy" in Wellesley, MA back in the day. My Mom would take my Sister and I there for lunch once a week during lunch break when we were in elementary school. The underside of the counter had literally tens of thousands of chewing gum deposits..... It became a bank, eventually, as the town further gentrified.

There must be a good story behind the "Chic n Coop" Restaurant.

It was a family business started in the late 30s.  It burned down in 1962.  Apparently today the Chic-n-Coop exists in Ontario but i have never heard of any in my city during my lifetime.
What strikes me the most about the research i did on this place is the place mat they used back in the day.  It's a simple piece of paper that is decorated with humor yet also portrays the reality of that era as well as its patriotic meaning.
Image
Its lateral perimeter contains funny artwork of hillbillies accompanied by chickens, cows and a dog while the interior scene depicts a totally different scenario.
It exhibits Hitler chained up with his two henchmen portrayed with chicken bodies being tried by a jury of chickens and a judge who is depicted as the entire world (note, his head resembles the globe). The fictional outcome is clearly indicated below, "Guilty! -Sentenced to fry!
Therefore we can conclude that the head chef who is following with a frying pan from behind Hitler and his henchmen, is in fact their executioner.  The surrounding slogan is also suggestive that war is imminent:
"All folks who are hungry, for miles will troop to get the best"

You had to ask.

Great pictures and fond memories of your city. I was there in 1967 for EXPO. My buddy and I got tattoos down on St Laurent and St. Catherine street. Cost us a dollar each. We got the idea for the tats after drinking beer in a bar with some sailors. Yes we were underage. Would love to see a picture of that intersection Arik. Remember eating smoked meat sandwich near that corner.

"Dunn's"?
Myer Dunn Founded Dunn’s Famous Restaurant in 1927. Due to his unique recipe and high quality standards, Dunn’s Famous became a favourite among residents and visitors and has remained that way ever since.

Some rather serious snow you got there.

In that same time period, I seem to remember special snow tires (used on the rear wheels only, I think) that were recaps with a special rubber blend containing sawdust. They lasted only one season, but were great on Pittsburgh's snowy and icy hills. Did you have these up there?
