For that last picture with the different style syncro yes. Thats the innards of the old 4psd I pulled out it whined in almost every gear I don't plan on re-using it.
Going out of town tomorrow so I wont get to pull the trans out until after I return. This means I will spend my vacation trying to research whats wrong.

I did find this picture which makes it look like the front layshaft bearing is up against the layshaft, so that might be normal.

Alright I pulled the trans and got a closer look.

The slider engagement to 3rd gear feels wrong. I can shift into 3rd but as I turn the input shaft there are two clunks and the slider sort of moves for the second clunk. 2nd/1st gear do not behave this way.

So is something wrong with the hub or slider?

Nope!
From reading more about different transmission sounds I am going to guess that the layshaft should have been replaced along with the rest of the gears.
I ended up getting a used Lada trans that has the shifter in the correct location for my Sedan so this trans is on the shelf for now. I did notice that the Lada trans makes a similar truck-ish sound on decel when the engine is at low RPM...

Was that noise not coming from the differential, or the loosened driveshaft flange screws on the diff?
The video with the ticking of the engaged gear makes me still think. I build such gearboxes and diffs for my living :)
Was the syncro ring set properly around the gear? It makes about 1,5 turns around it, one end is held by that thin toothed plate

and "hooked" sideways into a groove, other is pressing the brass ring AND sitting in an other groove. The closing clip has to sit properly in its thin seat. When you press the syncro ring onto the gear by hand, they touch completely and the syncro ring must disappear. I would think the ends of the big syncro ring are put one step (groove) too close to each other, making the ring sit loose and jam behind the edge of the syncro ring. If that is the case, that can be fixed without dismantling everything again.
