starting problem...any ideas?

Post by ga.spyder »

Hey everybody. I wont bore you with the details of the trials and tribulations I have gone thru with my 82.Due in large part to the help I have received here with parts and knowledge I have a running car.I cant thank all of you enough. I can go out to the car, start it right up,and head out.She is running well!
My issue is that once the car is up to temp and has been running for a bit,it doesnt want to restart? I have spark and the fuel pump is running.I just turns over freely, but will not restart. After sitting for a while,it starts with the touch of the key.Very odd  Any ideas?
Also ,does anyone have a cover for the AFM? Mine appears to have walked out of the garage at sometime during my work

Now here here Craig, I thought you were isolated in the GA mountains and there was no one with in 100 miles to give you a hand.
Great news you are making headway with your car. Hope you have a couple months of snow free driving way down there in the land of GA.

I thought someone took my AFM cover and later I found mine in the cross member opening that seem to collect everything I drop.

Glad to hear you got it running again! What you're now describing sounds the same as a problem I had years ago, which I traced to the fine wire between the distributor and the coil. It had been heat-cycled too many times by the exhaust header and needed replacing. I think the resistance builds up after many heat cycles and prevents it from working properly. Resting for a while cures the problem. It's a cheap fix, so why not try replacing it? Enjoy your mild fall weather - it's practically winter here!

And route the new wire around the radiator reservoir to keep it away from the exhaust. If you don't have a distributor, ignore the advice! :D

you might have leaking injector(s) that are flooding the engine when shut off. Install a pressure gauge in the hose to the cold start injector. Run the car and monitor the pressure drop when the engine is shut off. If the pressure drops immediately, you have a leak. Then you have to isolate which injector is leaking

Thanks for the advice. I need to look into both of those. Today I took it on the longest drive since I've had it running. Only about a half hour or so. When I got home, at around noon, I shut it off and it would not restart. It is now after 8 PM and I just pushed it into the garage! No start. My bet is it will start in the morning. Very odd!

I know you said the fuel pump was running, but that's exactly what my car was doing and it turned out to be the fuel pump. Would start fine when cold but not when hot. You sure the pump runs when the car is hot and won't start?

Hey Bruce. The pump is coming on, but I can't say if it is actually moving fuel. So near and yet so far...I just want to drive (and restart) :(
