Pulling the motor - Tips Tricks ?

Post by ez2wire »

Can't find anything at least not with pictures or technical tips.

I have to pull the motor from my friends 75' just wondering if its easy enough on jack stands with a engine hoist, OR would it be worth it to take it to a friends house with a two post car lift ?

Seems easy enough.. but know with every car things can be trickier than they appear and there could be "surprises" and or tricks.

Don't know these little buggers enough to know any of that.

Jackstands and engine hoist will be fine, done it many times. Remove the hood and radiator. Biggest headaches are the three starter bolts and four bolts that secure the motor to the trans. Once you get those seven bolts removed the rest is a piece of cake. I like to remove the intake and exhaust manifold but not necessary. Most everyone at one time or another forgets to remove the little flywheel shield on the lower face of the transmission.

Some people pull the cross member under the engine before yanking the engine/transmission. I think I will try that next time I have to pull the motor.

Thanks, motor coming in this weekend.

So transmission can stay in place ?

I am used to my Opels where you have to pull the transmission.

This is what I found pulling the head:

Oh and that valve isn't just sitting in the head.. its a part of the head now, its in there good.

What does the top of the piston look like? You don't need to pull the trans but if you do, you will need to undo one end of the steering link to swing it out of the way and get the front of the car high enough and I'm not sure you can get it high enough with jackstands, only pulled the engine and trans as a unit with the car on a lift.

I pulled the engine and transmission together on jackstands. Removing the center link will make it easier, but I was able to get it in and out with a little fiddling with the center link in place.

At the risk of starting a passionate discussion I think pulling the engine and transmission together is easier pulling the engine alone, and it lets you look over (and fix problems with) the transmission.

I pulled engine and transmission together and had no significant issues. Putting them back in together was tougher. As I mentioned earlier, I think next time I'll drop the cross member. You will have to drop the steering cross member, but hey, if you have the engine out, it's a great time to replace those worn out steering components...

Keep those metal cam gears! I had the teeth wear out on my plastic gears and the t-belt slipped and I bent (but did not break) all my valves.
