retrofit 79+ gas pedal to pre-70

Post by jetboy »

my 69- a major project in every way- has a 1775 engine in it.. and I purchased a later 79+ pedal assembly so that I could use the cable etc.

has anyone done this and have pics and/or experience to share? It seems relatively straight forward: just drill and bolt it in and drill a hole for the cable, but sometimes just a bit of wisdom from those who have gone before can go a long way.

It is straightforward, but you have to drop the steering column in order to pass the new pedal shaft across the way. Not a big deal, and the improved idle is well worth it. Most guys have their troubles with this swap on the other end; creating a linkage to work with a different carb. If you're stock on that end, it should be easy. When adjusting, remember that you want the throttle capable of opening fully, but you don't want the carburetor to be the "stop".

thanks! I may attempt it on thursday- I removed the old one already, and waiting on some linkage bits and the cable. I ordered an EMPI carb from Mark + the bits to get to it, so hopefully that side is straight forward.

nice. I admit that first I tried to figure out some way to get the stock pedal to work.. but all the solutions were pretty ugly. Like a cable running a circle around the carb with some angle iron bolted to the firewall to hold it etc... then i decided- just do the conversion and move on to the other 100 things on the list.

For whatever reason it didn't work on my 71. The major wiring harness in the firewall was in the way. Since im running IDFs, I did use the cam cover lever and cable with a slight modification in the angle of the arm off of the existing and a small cable bracket bolted to the rear most nut on the carb. Works fine.

interesting. I did not get to it today as I got distracted with rust converting the floorboards and putting in new door panels - which ended up being a more major project than I had hoped (I think I am going with velcro after some advice from this site)

Hopefully the wiring harness will not be an issue as I removed the dash and can re-route if necessary. I might be able to get to it tomorrow- we will see. I am trying to do things in the morning before I go to work - so I keep getting interrupted by that pesky thing that is paying for all of this.

the 69 has a bunch more wiring and gizmodges in the way down there than these pics- may need to relocate some.
