This is strictly a question out of curiosity. On the speedometer, there is a peg which keeps the speedometer from going below some minimal value. Intuitively, one would put this peg at 0 MPH (or 0 KM/h). So, when you're stopped the speedometer says you're going 0 MPH. Instead, the peg is at about 5 MPH. So, when you're stopped, it read 5!

Does anyone know why it was done this way?

most probably for calibration, I once saw a Porsche that started at 20kph...at least that is what I recall
