OK, possible dumb question: I'm replacing front wheel bearings. On the inner bearing, does the c-clip essentially 'disappear'when you gently tap it in to install? I've got it in but it's very plain to see - to the point where i can easily get a screwdriver in there to pry it out. I can also pop out the bearing with the clip installed. Want to make sure it's right before I install the grease seal.
Thanks in advance.

Re: wheel bearing question
It's not meant to hold the bearing in. Near as I can figure out, it's used as a spacer to keep the seal from moving in.

Re: wheel bearing question
Just helps keep the bearing in place while you tap the seal in and until you mount the hub on the spindle, put the outer in place and tighten everything up along with prevents you from driving the seal in too deep. Technically its not really needed but is nice to have.
