'84 Spider electric trunk latch photo needed

Post by kmoses »

I need a photo showing how the '84 Spider electric trunk latch solenoid is mounted. I would like to add one to my '79 Spider if possible. Thanks!

I would also like info on the '84 trunk latch. Was it an option? I have an '84 that is all original from what I know, but no electric trunk latch.

From what I understand, most have been disconnected. I know on my 85 it is no longer operational and I have not really looked at close enough to get it working. It is my understanding that either the key had to be in the ignition or the car running (don't know which) for the switch to open the trunk.

My car is in temporary storage (too many summertime house-guests and not enough available parking :( ), but I'll try to get some pictures over the weekend.

As I understand it, the electric circuit connects though the oil pressure switch which prevents the solenoid switch from opening the trunk while the engine is running (or at road speed). And yes, the ignition key has to be in the on position before the switch can open the trunk as well. A simple misunderstanding of the switch might make current owners think their electric trunk latch was inoperable when in fact it was working just fine.

There are universal trunk release kits available at JC Whitney from about $12. The installation is pretty straight forward. Yes there should be a relay that prevents the trunk release from working while the vehicle is in motion and to prevent thieves from using it to get into the trunk when they key is not in the ignition. That is why many put the release button inside the glove box and keep it locked when the car is parked.

As you can see, the actuator is part of the latch.

Thanks ORFORD2004, it looks like they just made the opening under the latch larger so the solenoid actuator could slide in.
